Powders are used in many industries today and the bulk properties of a powder are dependent upon the preparation, treatment, and storage of a sample. Since small disturbances of bulk powders result in a changed bulk density, it is often very difficult to measure with good reproducibility. The new PTG-NIR from Pharma Test is here to solve these issues and ensure reproducibility.

PTG-NIR powder analysis system

The PTG-NIR is a Powder Analysis System and consists of a PTG-S5 powder characterization instrument and a connected TIDAS L diode-array NIR spectrometer from J&M. The powder characterization instrument measures the flow behavior of powders to reduce process costs and maintain batch-to-batch quality. It determines the powder flow time and measures the cone angle (angle of repose) of the collected powder mound. While measuring the weight, the powder cone density, the powder cone volume as well as the EP „flowability“ results are calculated.

By adding the TIDAS® L NIR spectrometer the range of application is expanded for the additional analysis of moisture content and API concentration. This innovative approach means that the range of analytical information available from a single powder sample has now been greatly increased. In Pharmaceutical applications, it is now possible analyze all incoming raw materials (e.g., non-active ingredients) regarding their content as well as their moisture. This quick and non-destructive test provides all information required before the material is passed on into the production cycle. The flow characteristics and water content critically affect the way that the powder or powder mix will flow into the tableting machine for example.
