Color Measurement Applications

Use J&M TIDAS Instruments for Colorimetry in Food Industry, of Precious Stones or in Dental Medicine

Colorimetry, the science of color measurement, is widely employed in commerce, industry, and the laboratory to express color in numerical terms and to measure color differences between specimens. Applications include paints, inks, plastics, textiles and apparel, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, displays, and other parts and products that reflect or transmit color.

Color measurement became more important with global manufacturing. While producing one plastic part of a car on one continent for example, it has to match the painting on parts produced on another continent. The description of the color has to be precise and in an objective way. Besides the conventional color measurements with integration sphere in accordance to CIE standards, today in-line, in-situ, and at-line methods are getting very popular in quality control. The quick detection of deviations from a default value became more important than the absolute color values which takes hours to determine in the lab.

Color sensors from J&M perform 24/7 in blenders and extruders also under very harsh environmental conditions. Contactless color measurement on objects passing on conveyer belts for packing stations or further production steps guarantees the constant quality of the final product. In the food industry, J&M instruments are used to perform color monitoring of beer, soft drinks, flour, coffee, meat, and many others. When it comes to expertise in the analysis of precious stones like diamonds, rubies, emeralds, or sapphires or in antique objects of art, J&M spectrometers with special reflections probes are mandatory. In dental medicine, slightest color differences of the implants to the native teeth are detected with a special fiber optic probe and a custom light source, that do not inflict pain because of local heat spots.
